Forget Best Practices. Create Next Practices™

From Roy…

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

Every week I share one Audacious Move™—a bold decision, hard-earned lesson, or unconventional idea drawn from decades of real-world business experience.

Bold Decisions Create Extraordinary Businesses.

I hope it helps you create yours.

🚀 Forget Best Practices. Create Next Practices™

Every industry is obsessed with “Best Practices”.

Study the leaders.

Benchmark the competition.

Copy what works.

It sounds smart.

It’s also the fastest way to become invisible.

The moment everyone adopts a best practice, it stops being an advantage.

It becomes the new standard.

The price of admission.

You can’t become extraordinary by mastering ordinary.

🎯 Best Practices Create Sameness

I’ve never believed benchmarking creates greatness.

It creates sameness.

Benchmarking teaches you how to catch up.

It never teaches you how to lead.

When you benchmark, you’re chasing yesterday.

When everyone follows the same playbook, everyone ends up looking the same.

That’s not strategy.

That’s imitation.

💡 Next Practices™ Invent Tomorrow

The organizations that win don’t copy what works.

They create what comes next.

Best Practices earn you a seat at the table. Next Practices™ let you own the table.

Throughout my career, I wasn’t interested in being better than the competition.

I wanted to be The ONLY One™.

That meant asking a completely different question.

Not, “What are competitors doing?”

But, “What could customers experience that they’ve never experienced before?”

Innovation isn’t about inventing new technology.

It’s about inventing new value.

🔥 Become the ONLY One™

Next Practices™ are created one bold decision at a time.

They can be surprisingly simple.

* Say YES!™ when everyone else says no.
* Eliminate dumb rules customers hate.
* Create dazzling experiences people remember.
* Let customers architect your internal rules.
* Solve customer problems rather than try to enforce company policies.

Eventually competitors will copy you.

Good.

Your competitive advantage is always temporary.

Which means your next competitive advantage should already be under construction.

Organizations that rely on best practices become followers.

Organizations that relentlessly create

Next Practices™ become leaders.

🚀 Make Your Next Audacious Move™

Stop benchmarking.

Start inventing.

Create value your competitors haven’t imagined.

Become The ONLY One™.

That’s how markets are led.

That’s how extraordinary businesses grow.

Now that’s an Audacious Move™.

🚀 What’s Your Next Audacious Move™?

Reading ideas is easy.

Acting on them, however, is what creates extraordinary businesses.

BE DiFFERENT or be dead™ is more than a philosophy—it’s about making the bold decisions others won’t.

ORDINARY. DOESN’T. GROW.

ORDINARY. DOESN’T. GROW.

Business growth demands differentiation because if customers can’t see why you’re different, they have no compelling reason to choose you over their competitors.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

💯 How to Stay Relevant in a Competitive World: Be Different or Become Irrelevant

Bold Decisions Create Extraordinary Businesses.

I hope it helps you create yours.

Standing still is a death sentence.

In today’s hyper-competitive business world, companies don’t slowly fade away—they become irrelevant because they keep doing what everyone else is doing.

If your strategy is to benchmark competitors, copy best practices, and compete on price, you’re already losing.

In my latest book, The Audacious Unheard-of Ways I Took a Startup to a Billion in Sales, I share the practical strategies we used to grow a startup into a billion-dollar business without following the herd.

Everything in the book comes from real experience—not theory, not textbooks, not consultants.

🚀 Audacity Beats Playing It Safe

Our journey to a billion dollars wasn’t built by following conventional wisdom.

It was built by breaking it.

Most organizations spend their lives looking over their shoulder at competitors.

That’s exactly the wrong direction. If everyone is chasing the same opportunities, the only prize waiting is average.

Real growth comes from doing what others won’t do because it doesn’t fit the textbook.

Innovation isn’t simply inventing another product or adding another feature.

Innovation is changing the game.

Instead of competing on price or product features, we obsessed over creating “gasp-worthy” customer experiences that people couldn’t stop talking about.

That’s how you separate yourself in a crowded market.

🔥 Stop Trying to Be the Best. Become The ONLY One

Here’s the lesson most organizations never learn:

Being the best isn’t enough. You must become The ONLY One.

Your job is to build something competitors cannot copy because it’s uniquely yours.

That requires understanding three things:

* What your customers truly CRAVE—not just what they need.
* What your competitors can’t or won’t deliver.
* What you can own better than anyone else.

We deliberately chose high-value customer segments and built integrated solutions specifically for them.

We weren’t trying to serve everyone.

We wanted to become indispensable to someone.

That’s how loyalty is built.

💡 Innovation Is a Habit, Not an Event

Innovation isn’t a project.

It’s an organizational habit.

If your culture punishes failure, don’t expect people to take risks.

We encouraged experimentation because we knew not every idea would succeed.

Failure wasn’t something to avoid.

It was tuition.

Every experiment taught us something that made the next one stronger.

Organizations that wait for perfect ideas rarely produce anything remarkable.

❤️ Live Where Your Customers Live

The greatest competitive advantage isn’t technology.

It isn’t AI.

It isn’t price.

It’s being closer to your customers than anyone else.

We embedded ourselves with customers. We listened constantly. We watched how their expectations changed and adapted before competitors even noticed.

“Needs” tell you where customers are today.

CRAVINGS tell you where they’re going tomorrow.

The organizations that understand customer cravings lead markets.

Everyone else follows.

⚡ Relevance Is a Choice

Markets move.

Customers change.

Competitors copy.

The organizations that survive are the ones that keep reinventing themselves.

Our billion-dollar journey wasn’t powered by luck.

It was powered by audacity, differentiation, relentless execution, and an obsession with serving customers better than anyone else.

The choice couldn’t be simpler:

Innovate—or evaporate.

The companies that stay relevant won’t be the biggest.

They won’t necessarily have the most money.

They’ll be the ones with the courage to be different when everyone else is busy fitting in.

That’s how you win.

And that’s how you stay relevant.

HOPE. STALLS. CAREERS.

HOPE. STALLS. CAREERS.

Career growth doesn’t happen by hoping someone notices you; it happens when you deliberately create experiences and value that make you impossible to ignore.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

Career Growth Strategies: How to Take Control of Your Career.

Bold Decisions Create Amazing Careers.

I hope it helps you create yours.

🚀 From Aspiration to Achievement: Create the Career Success You Deserve

Everyone wants a better career.

A bigger role.
More responsibility.
More influence.
More money.

But here’s the problem.

Most people drift through their careers hoping someone notices them.

Hope isn’t a career strategy.

After spending decades leading organizations and coaching executives, I’ve learned that careers stall for three reasons:

* No career plan.
* No differentiation.
* No alignment with what the organization actually needs.

Fix those three things and your career changes dramatically.

🎯 Stop Winging It. Build a Career Plan

If you don’t know exactly where you’re going, don’t be surprised when you never get there.

Every successful career begins with a destination.

My approach is simple.

BIG

Define the position you want.

Be specific.

Not “more senior role.”

Not “management someday.”

Exactly what role do you want?

WHO

Identify the “Foxes”.

These are the people who influence decisions, open doors and shape careers.

Know who they are.

Build relationships before you need them.

ONLY

Decide why YOU are the obvious choice.

Not one of many.

The ONLY ONE.

The objective is simple: Become the ONLY person who does what you do in a way that perfectly supports where the organization is headed.

That’s how careers accelerate.

⭐ Create Your ONLY Statement

Most professionals describe what they do.

Exceptional professionals explain why only they can do it that way.

That’s your ONLY Statement.

It’s your competitive advantage.

Start here.

First, understand what your organization is trying to accomplish.

What are its strategic priorities?

What keeps senior leadership awake at night?

Now compare those needs with your own strengths.

Where do they intersect?

If there’s a gap…

Go build the skills.

Here’s mine.

“Roy is the ONLY coach and advisor who uses The ONLY Statement as a practical, proven tool to help organizations and individuals create a competitive advantage.”

Simple.

Specific.

Clear.

Your ONLY Statement should clearly explain why choosing YOU is the obvious decision.

💥 Setbacks Don’t Define You

Every career includes disappointment.

Mine certainly did.

During one corporate merger, I was passed over for a leadership position I expected to get.

I had two choices.

Feel sorry for myself.

Or get back to work.

I chose the second.

I focused on helping the organization succeed.

I refused to take the decision personally.

And I kept delivering results.

Twelve months later, I was asked to become President of our early-stage Internet business.

We eventually grew it into a business generating $1 BILLION in annual sales.

Career setbacks are temporary.

Unless you decide they aren’t.

🔥 Three Career Moves That Actually Matter

Forget the generic career advice.

Focus on these three things.

1. Develop Line of Sight

Understand your organization’s strategy.

Know exactly where it’s going.

Then position yourself to help get it there.

2. Build Your ONLY Statement

Become known for something no one else can honestly claim.

Different wins.

Same loses.

3. Execute Relentlessly

Ideas don’t earn promotions.

Results do.

The professionals who consistently execute are the ones organizations can’t afford to lose.

💡 Final Thought

Your career doesn’t belong to your boss.

It doesn’t belong to HR.

And it certainly doesn’t belong to luck.

It belongs to YOU.

Build a plan.

Develop your ONLY Statement.

Align yourself with what matters most to your organization.

Then execute better than anyone else.

Because careers aren’t built by aspiration.

They’re built by audacious moves.

And the biggest move you’ll ever make is deciding to become The ONLY One.

🚀 What’s Your Next Audacious Move™?

Reading ideas is easy.

Acting on them, however, is what creates amazing careers.

BE DiFFERENT or be dead™ is more than a philosophy—it’s about making the bold decisions others won’t.

YOUR. SAMENESS. PROBLEM.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

YOUR. SAMENESS. PROBLEM.

Your competitors aren’t your biggest business problem. Your lack of differentiation is.
When your products, service and marketing look like everyone else’s, you give customers little reason to choose you beyond price.
Becoming The ONLY One™ starts with discovering what your chosen customers crave and building your business around delivering it.

Your sameness is yours to fix.

🐑 You Don’t Have a Competition Problem. You Have a Sameness Problem.

Why do so many businesses fail to stand out in insanely competitive markets?

They blame competition.

Too many competitors. Too much noise. Too many choices. Too much pressure on price.

I don’t buy it.

Most organizations don’t disappear into the competitive crowd because there are too many competitors.

They disappear because they behave too much like them.

🐑 They study the Herd

Businesses are obsessed with what everyone else is doing.

They benchmark.

Study “best in class.”

Attend conferences where competitors share their latest thinking.

Read the same textbooks.

Hire consultants trained in the same methodologies.

Then they wonder why customers can’t tell them apart.

You can’t study the Herd and expect to escape it.

The more energy you spend copying what successful competitors do, the more likely you are to become another version of them.

That’s not differentiation.

That’s sameness with a different logo.

🗑️ They drown in claptrap

Then there’s the language.

“Quality.”

“Integrity.”

“Excellence.”

“Customer focused.”

“Innovative.”

Seriously?

These aren’t differentiators.

They’re aspirations every organization claims.

They’re corporate claptrap.

And much of it is narcissistic.

It’s about what the organization wants to say about itself rather than what the people it has chosen to serve actually CRAVE.

Customers don’t care about your adjectives.

They care about what you can do for them that nobody else does.

🎯 DiFFERENT has to matter

Being different just for the sake of being different is useless.
The objective isn’t to be weird.

It’s to create something relevant and unique for the WHO you have chosen to serve.

What do they CRAVE?

What can you deliver that your competitors don’t?

What can you become The ONLY One™ to provide?

That’s the work.

Not becoming “better.”

Not becoming “best.”

Becoming The ONLY One™ who does what you do to deliver what your chosen customers crave.

STOP STUDYING YOUR COMPETITORS AND START STUDYING YOUR CUSTOMERS

Take your current differentiation statement and ask one brutal question:
“Could one of our competitors say exactly the same thing?”

If the answer is yes, throw it out.

Then get close to your WHO.

Discover what they CRAVE.

And create something competitors aren’t already doing.

Don’t compete harder inside the Herd.

Escape it.
