Don’t Get Sucked Into the Tactics Trap: Strategy Must Come First
Bold Decisions Create Extraordinary Businesses.
I hope it helps you create yours.
Businesses are being seduced by tactics.
AI. Social media. Automation. Content platforms. The latest “gee whiz” technology promising instant growth.
And businesses stampede toward them.
Because they’re new. Because competitors are doing it. Because they look “YUMMY”.
Here’s the brutal truth:
Tactics without strategy are just random acts of business.
They consume money, people and time without necessarily moving the business anywhere.
🚨 Beware the Tactics Trap
Tactics are seductive because they feel like action.
Launch an AI project. Start another social media campaign. Install new technology. Automate something.
Everyone gets busy.
But busy isn’t strategic.
Before pursuing any tactic, ask:
“What part of our strategy will this help us execute?”
If there isn’t a compelling answer, don’t do it.
Period.
🧭 Strategy Must Come First
Strategy defines the game you intend to play.
My Strategic Game Plan™ forces you to answer four questions:
HOW BIG do you want to be?
WHO do you intend to SERVE?
WHAT do they CRAVE?
HOW will you COMPETE and WIN?
Only after making these choices should tactics enter the conversation.
The order matters:
Strategy → Tactics → Execution → Results.
Reverse it and you’re collecting tools without knowing what you’re trying to build.
🤖 AI Is the Perfect Example
The AI Goldrush is creating one of the biggest Tactics Traps I’ve seen.
Businesses everywhere are asking:
“How can we use AI?”
Wrong question.
Ask:
“Where can AI help us execute our strategy?”
One starts with technology.
The other starts with the business.
Maybe AI improves customer responsiveness. Maybe it removes friction. Maybe it eliminates CRAP™ that consumes resources without contributing to the strategy.
Great. Use it.
But don’t use AI simply because everyone else is.
AI optimizes the common. Strategy creates the uncommon.
🎯 Make Every Tactic Earn Its Place
Every tactic should have to pass a strategic test.
Does it help serve the customers you’ve chosen?
Does it address what they CRAVE?
Does it strengthen your ONLY Statement™?
Does it improve execution of a strategic priority?
If not, dump it.
Strategy isn’t only about deciding what to do.
Strategy gives you permission to say NO.
NO to shiny objects.
NO to competitor imitation.
NO to technology looking for a purpose.
NO to anything that distracts you from executing your game plan.
🔥 Strategy First. Tactics Second. Always.
Stop asking:
“Should we use this?”
Start asking:
“How will this help us execute our strategy?”
Don’t chase AI.
Don’t chase technology.
Don’t chase whatever the business herd decides is YUMMY next.
Build the strategy first.
Then choose the tactics that bring it to life.
The tool should never determine the strategy. The strategy should determine the tool.
🚀 What’s Your Next Audacious Move™?
Pick one tactic consuming resources in your organization right now.
Ask:
“Exactly what part of our Strategic Game Plan™ does this help us execute?”
Can’t answer it?
Stop doing it.
Put those resources behind something that actually moves your strategy forward.
Strategy first. Tactics second. Always.
