DOING. BEATS. KNOWING.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

DOING. BEATS. KNOWING.

Bold Decisions Create Extraordinary Businesses.

I hope it helps you create yours.

Business growth doesn’t come from consuming more business theory. It comes from executing, learning what works and building your organization around it.

Stop borrowing other people’s beliefs. Build your own from what works.

I’m often asked which business books and mentors had the greatest influence on my leadership philosophy.

My answer probably disappoints people.

There wasn’t one.

I wasn’t particularly interested in joining the business book club.

I was interested in performance.

When you’re trying to grow a startup into a business doing more than $1 BILLION in annual sales, theories don’t get much respect.

Results do.

So I learned by doing stuff.

Trying things.

Watching what happened.

Keeping what moved the performance needle.

Killing what didn’t.

And changing direction FAST when something stopped working.

Over time, those experiences became my BE DiFFERENT Growth Playbook™:

CREATE IT → OPERATE IT → LEAD IT.

Not because somebody taught me that model.

Because that’s what I discovered actually worked.

🎯 CREATE IT

Don’t spend months polishing a strategic plan nobody will remember.

Get your Strategic Game Plan™ Just About Right™.

Decide HOW BIG you want to be.

Choose WHO you intend to SERVE.

Discover what they CRAVE.

Then determine how you will COMPETE and WIN by becoming The ONLY One™ who delivers what they care about.

Then execute.

BE Imperfect FAST™.

Execute. Learn. Adjust. Revise.

⚙️ OPERATE IT

A strategy sitting in a binder is worthless.

You have to bake it into the way the organization operates.

Cleanse the Inside.

Delete to innovate.

Kill Dumb Rules™.

Cut The CRAP™.

Design customer experiences people remember.

And create an Organizational Instinct™ that solves customer problems rather than defends company policies.

👊 LEAD IT

Execution doesn’t happen because leaders issue orders from their office.

It happens because leaders get dirty.

Serve Around™ asking one simple question:

“How can I help?”

Create Line of Sight™ between what every person does and the strategy.

Take care of the frontline because they control your brand and strategy execution.

And develop Fingerprint Leadership™ that leaves your personal mark on how the organization performs.

💥 The lesson

My business philosophy wasn’t created by studying what successful organizations supposedly did.

It evolved from discovering what produced amazing performance in the real world.

There were people whose thinking later resonated with me—Seth Godin, Lady Gaga and even The Grateful Dead among them.

But I didn’t copy them.

That would violate the whole point.

Create. Don’t copy.

Your greatest business lessons won’t be found in somebody else’s book.

They’re happening inside your business right now.

Pay attention to them.

Find what works.

Do more of it.

Find what doesn’t.

Kill it.

And turn what you learn into your own way of winning.

AI. CAN’T. DIFFERENTIATE.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

AI. CAN’T. DIFFERENTIATE.

AI can help businesses move faster, create more content and become more efficient, but it can’t give you what matters most for growth: a unique competitive position that makes you The ONLY One™ in the market.

AI 🤖 may be making everyone smarter—but what if it also makes everyone sound the same?

That is the danger hiding inside the promise.

Give millions of people access to the same astonishing technology. Let them ask similar questions, draw from the same vast pool of knowledge and receive increasingly polished answers. The result may not be a world of original thinkers.

It may be the most intelligent, articulate and indistinguishable herd we’ve ever created.

AI could make sameness faster, smarter and harder to detect.

And that makes Standing Alone more important than ever.

🎯 AI Loves Patterns. DiFFERENT Breaks Them.

AI is brilliant at finding patterns.

It learns from what has already been written, created, tried and discovered.

It recognizes what normally happens and produces remarkably useful answers from it.

But BE DiFFERENT has never been about what normally happens.

It’s about breaking away from the expected.

Doing what the herd isn’t doing.

Creating something people haven’t seen before.

Standing Alone.

That’s where your advantage over AI begins.

🔥 The Herd Just Got Smarter

I’ve spent decades warning organizations about the Herd of Sameness™.

Businesses copy competitors.

Leaders adopt Best Practices.

Organizations benchmark themselves against others and then wonder why customers can’t tell them apart.

AI could make this problem worse.

Much worse.

Because now the herd has an incredibly powerful tool helping it become better at what the herd already does.

Sameness just got smarter.

That should scare the hell out of you.

💥 Your Weirdness Just Became More Valuable

AI doesn’t have your life.

It hasn’t experienced your failures.

It hasn’t made your mistakes.

It hasn’t dealt with your customers, fought your battles or made the crazy decision everyone opposed that somehow worked.

Those experiences have created something uniquely yours.

Your judgement.

Your instincts.

Your convictions.

Your weirdness.

Don’t polish those things away because AI gives you something that sounds better.

Double down on them.

Because as AI makes conventional thinking easier to produce, unconventional thinking becomes more valuable.

🚀 The Audacious Move™

Don’t compete with AI at being smart.

You’ll lose.

And don’t blindly accept what it gives you.

You’ll disappear into the herd.

Instead, use AI—and then have the courage to walk away from the predictable answer.

Take the unexpected path.

Say what nobody else is saying.

Do what doesn’t fit the pattern.

Stand Alone.

Because the more AI makes it possible for everyone to think alike, the more valuable it becomes to think differently.

AI can master the pattern.

You can break it.

Now that’s an Audacious Move.

COMFORT. LOVES. CROWDS.

🚀 Audacious Move of the Week

COMFORT. LOVES. CROWDS.

Business Differentiation: Why Following the Crowd Kills Growth.

Business differentiation is how you stand out from competitors, create a competitive advantage and drive business growth—and it starts by refusing to follow the crowd.

🔥 GET OUT OF THE CROWD!

The crowd is seductive.

It feels safe.

Everyone is doing roughly the same thing, using the same language, chasing the same ideas and following the same so-called “best practices.” ❌ 1671

And nobody gets criticized for fitting in.

That’s the problem.

⚠️ The crowd is where differentiation goes to die.

I learned this building a startup into a business doing more than a BILLION in annual sales.

We didn’t get there by studying what everyone else was doing and trying to do it a little better.

We got there by asking a completely different question:

💥 What can we do that nobody else is doing?

That question changes everything.

Because the moment you start benchmarking yourself against competitors, you’ve accepted their game.

You watch them.

Study them.

Copy what appears to work.

Polish it.

Maybe improve it a little.

And eventually everybody starts looking exactly the same.

Different logos.

Different colours.

Same damn business.

🐑 That’s the Herd of Sameness.

And growth suffocates there.

The Audacious Move?

Leave the herd. ❌ 1681

Stop asking, “What are our competitors doing?”

Start asking:

“What could we do that would make us impossible to compare?”

Then:

▪️ Create, don’t copy.

▪️ Build around what your WHO craves—not around what competitors already provide. ❌ 1778

▪️ Take risks on ideas that make people inside your organization uncomfortable.

▪️ If everyone immediately agrees with your idea, there’s a good chance it isn’t different enough.

And don’t expect certainty before you move.

You won’t get it.

⚡ BE Imperfect FAST™.

Execute. Learn. Adjust. ❌ 1775

Being different isn’t about being weird for the sake of attracting attention.

It’s about creating something relevant and unique for the people you’ve chosen to serve.

Something they CARE about.

Something competitors can’t easily copy.

Something that earns you the right to say:

🎯 We are The ONLY One™ who does this.

That’s what real business differentiation looks like.

Not being slightly better.

Not copying best practices.

Not trying to beat competitors at their own game.

Creating a game that belongs to you.

The crowd will always be there.

Safe.

Comfortable.

Predictable.

Average.

You have another choice.

Get out of it.

INCHES. DELIVER. BILLIONS.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week

INCHES. DELIVER. BILLIONS.

Extraordinary business growth isn’t always the result of one breakthrough strategy or spectacular decision.
In most cases, it’s the cumulative impact of hundreds of unconventional moves that make a business different and more relevant to its customers.

Stop searching for the ONE BIG IDEA that will transform your business. Start making moves that advance your business, even if it’s only a nano-inch at a time.

🔥 The BILLION Wasn’t One Big Idea.

We took a startup to over $1 BILLION in annual sales.

That’s a pretty big number.

And people naturally assume we must have done something spectacular to make it happen.

A revolutionary product.

A breakthrough strategy.

Some HUGE decision that changed everything.

Nope.

The BILLION wasn’t the result of ONE spectacular move.

It was the cumulative impact of hundreds of moves that challenged conventional thinking.

Different ways of serving customers.

Different ways of leading people.

Different ways of getting things done.

Individually, many didn’t look like much, in fact they looked kind of “crazy”.

But collectively, they created something extraordinary.

You don’t need to make a BILLION-DOLLAR MOVE to build a BILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS.

💥 What Did Our MOVES Look Like?

We didn’t just TALK about being different.

We actually DID things differently.

For example we:

* Killed Dumb Rules™ that dissatisfied customers.
* Hired for Goosebumps™ to get “Human Being Lovers”.
* Cut The CRAP™ to eliminate barriers to strategy execution.
* Lived Leadership by Serving Around™ asking “How can I help?”.
* Created Line of Sight™ to define strategy execution roles for everyone.
* Strategically Micromanaged™ the things essential to the execution of our strategy.
* Called the Audible™ when things went haywire.
* Got our strategy Just About Right™ and didn’t chase perfection.

These weren’t all massive strategic breakthroughs.

They were unconventional approaches to everyday business challenges.

Some were simple.

Some were uncomfortable.

All challenged accepted ways of doing things.

Together, they helped transform the way our organization operated.

The SIZE of the move isn’t what matters. The DIFFERENCE it creates does.

🎯 The Secret Is in the ACCUMULATION.

I’ve always believed in making a nano-inch of progress.

Not every move has to be spectacular.

Not every decision has to produce a massive breakthrough.

Sometimes all you get is a nano-inch.

GOOD.

One move eliminates a customer frustration.

Another simplifies a cumbersome process.

Another removes a barrier preventing an employee from doing their job.

Another makes you just a little MORE relevant to the customers you serve.

A nano-inch here. A nano-inch there.

Keep making those moves.

Every day.

Throughout the organization.

And those nano-inches ACCUMULATE.

Being different becomes the way your organization BEHAVES.

Not a marketing claim.

Not a clever slogan.

An Organizational Instinct™.

People instinctively look for different ways to solve customer problems rather than defend organizational policies.

The BILLION wasn’t created by one giant leap. It was built by relentlessly accumulating nano-inches of progress.

And that’s how you march toward becoming The ONLY One™ who does what you do.

⚡ The BEAUTY Is That EVERYONE Can Do It.

Here’s what I love most about this lesson.

You don’t need a billion-dollar business to use it.

You could run a small restaurant.

A retail shop.

A professional services firm.

A startup with five employees.

It doesn’t matter.

You can make a move tomorrow.

Kill ONE dumb rule.

Remove ONE frustrating customer touch point.

Find ONE way to surprise a customer.

Discover ONE customer craving nobody else is satisfying.

The moves don’t have to be expensive.

They don’t have to be complicated.

They just have to make a meaningful DIFFERENCE to someone who CARES.

And here’s the leadership challenge.

Don’t make these moves the exclusive responsibility of executives.

Build an organization FULL of people who challenge convention.

Give them the freedom to act.

Encourage them to Be Imperfect FAST™.

Execute. Learn. Adjust.

Then make another move.

The real power isn’t one audacious leader. It’s an organization full of people who dare to do things differently.

🚀 What’s Your Next Audacious Move™?

Stop waiting for the BIG ONE.

The next breakthrough idea.

The next strategic planning session.

The next technological revolution.

The opportunities to conduct business differently are already around you.

A stupid internal policy.

A frustrated customer.

An unnecessary process.

An employee with a crazy idea.

Your challenge?

Ask your team:

“What’s ONE MOVE we can make TODAY that will move us a nano-inch closer to becoming The ONLY One™?”

Then DO IT.

Learn.

Adjust.

And do it again.

Because our BILLION wasn’t built by one magical idea.

It was built by making being different a HABIT.

INCHES. DELIVER. BILLIONS.

You may never want to build a billion-dollar business.

That’s fine.

But you CAN build an extraordinary one.

ONE MOVE. ONE NANO-INCH. ONE DAY AT A TIME.
