BEST. WON’T. SAVE YOU.

🚀 Audacious Move™ of the Week
BEST. WON’T. SAVE YOU.
Bold Decisions Create Extraordinary Businesses.
I hope it helps you create yours.
A competitive advantage isn’t created by claiming you’re better than your competitors. It’s created by giving customers a compelling reason why you are The ONLY One™ they should choose.
Every organization faces one killer question:
“Why should I do business with you and not your competition?”
If you can’t answer that question clearly, all the technology, product innovation and ambitious growth plans in the world won’t save you.
Because customers don’t buy your strategy.
They choose between you and everyone else.
And if you sound like everyone else, why the hell should they choose you?
🚨 “Better” puts you in the Herd of Sameness™
Listen to the competitive claims organizations make:
“We have the best people.”
“We provide the highest quality.”
“We deliver exceptional customer service.”
“We’re the industry leader.”
“We’re #1.”
“We’ve been serving customers for 30 years.”
There’s no imagination in any of it.
Worse, competitors are saying exactly the same things.
You can’t create a meaningful competitive advantage by making a claim your competitors can make too.
And yet that’s exactly what most organizations do.
They benchmark competitors.
Copy successful products.
Match features.
Follow pricing.
Replicate processes.
Even the celebrated “fast follower” is still a copycat.
They just copy faster.
Copying doesn’t create differences. It manufactures sameness.
💥 Stop trying to be better
“Best” is a comparison.
“ONLY” is a position.
That difference matters.
If you claim to be the best, you’ve accepted the rules of the competitive game everyone else is playing.
You’re saying:
“We do what they do. We just do it better.”
That’s participation.
My approach is different.
I created The ONLY Statement™ to answer the competitive question with brutal clarity:
“We are the ONLY ones who…”
Not better.
Not #1.
Not the leader.
The ONLY One™.
It forces you to define a space you intend to own rather than fight everyone else for a slightly better position in a crowded one.
🎸 Jerry Garcia got it
Jerry Garcia, the legendary leader of The Grateful Dead, captured the idea perfectly:
“You don’t want merely to be the best of the best. You want to be the only ones who do what you do.”
Exactly.
Being “best” keeps you in the race.
Being The ONLY One™ changes the race.
🎯 ONLY has to matter to someone
There’s a catch.
You can create something unique that nobody gives a damn about.
That won’t grow your business.
Your ONLY Statement™ has to start with WHO to SERVE?
Who are the specific Customer Groups capable of delivering your HOW BIG? growth ambition?
Then discover:
WHAT do they CRAVE?
Not what you think they need.
Not what your product people want to sell them.
Not what the market research says the “average customer” wants.
What do the people you’ve chosen to serve crave badly enough that delivering it differently would make them choose you?
That’s where a powerful ONLY Statement™ begins.
It connects what you uniquely do with what your chosen customers deeply care about.
🔥 Your ONLY Statement™ has rules
You don’t become The ONLY One™ by throwing some clever words onto a PowerPoint slide.
There’s discipline involved.
Your ONLY must be brief.
It should be a sound bite, not a paragraph requiring a second breath.
It must speak to a specific Customer Group rather than some meaningless abstraction called “the market.”
It must describe the experience and value you create, not simply the products you flog.
It must address something your chosen customers actually care about.
And above all:
It must be true.
Because claiming you’re The ONLY One™ at something and then failing to deliver it is worse than having no claim at all.
Customers will expose you.
Fast.
That’s why your ONLY Statement™ is never merely a marketing statement.
It’s a promise the entire organization has to keep.
💣 Your ONLY Statement™ is never finished
Don’t fall in love with the first version.
It’ll probably be wrong.
Or at least Just About Right™.
Put it into the real world.
Test it with customers.
Test it with employees.
Listen.
Learn.
Adjust.
Watch your competitors.
Because if your ONLY starts working, somebody will eventually try to copy it.
Good.
That means you’ve disturbed them.
Now move again.
Competitive advantage isn’t something you declare once and protect forever.
You have to keep earning it.
🚀 The Audacious Move™
Put your ONLY Statement™ on trial.
Don’t ask your leadership team whether they like it.
Don’t ask Marketing whether the words sound good.
Take it to the people who actually have to make it true.
Your frontline.
Give them real customer situations and ask:
“What would you have to do differently in this situation for our ONLY Statement™ to remain true?”
Then listen carefully.
If they don’t know, your ONLY is still marketing.
If they know but aren’t allowed to act, your operating model is fighting your strategy.
If they know, have the authority and instinctively act in a way that proves your ONLY, you’re beginning to own the space you claimed.
That’s the leap most organizations never make.
From SAYING they’re The ONLY One™…
…to OPERATING like The ONLY One™.
That’s when differentiation stops being a strategy.
And becomes an operating principle.
